 His father left the Family Business to James (he had to support his mother, and share the sum of £100 between all his brothers and sisters). In 1851 he was recorded to own 28 acres of land. His unmarried sister Ann lived with him as his housekeeper, and he employed two men, James West as a servant and Soloman Simpson as an apprentice. James was 58 years old when he died. He was buried at Askham Richard on the 3rd of March 1864.

On the 15th of April 1945 he went down to meet his granddaughter Hazel from scho> ol where he collapsed and died. He was 71 years old, and was buried in Wighill churchyard.
