Here is a possible explanation. http://ww2.durham.gov.uk/community/dipton/Coal.htm *It should be remembered that prior to 186 9 miners were employed on a 'Yearly Bond', which was usually entered into on 5th April and wh ich fixed the rates of pay and conditions available at each individual colliery for that peri od. Once the miners had signed on they had no rights, either individually or collective to be a party to any Agreements between Coal Owners, whereby labour was bought and sold. If an yone broke the Bond, he was liable to arrest, trial and imprisonment. Indeed the miners lot w as little better than cattle being bought and sold in a Cattle Market.
